Elastic backscattering of quantum spin Hall edge modes from Coulomb interactions with nonmagnetic impurities

چکیده

We demonstrate that electrostatic interactions between helical electrons at the edge of a quantum spin Hall insulator and dynamical impurity can induce quasi-elastic backscattering. Modelling as two-level system, we show transitions counterpropagating Kramers-degenerate electronic states occur without breaking time-reversal symmetry, provided also undergoes transition. The associated electrical resistance has weak temperature dependence down to non-universal scale. Our results extend range known backscattering mechanisms in modes include scenarios where electron tunnelling out system is absent.

Imaging of Coulomb-driven quantum Hall edge states.

The edges of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in the quantum Hall effect (QHE) regime are divided into alternating metallic and insulating strips, with their widths determined by the energy gaps of the QHE states and the electrostatic Coulomb interaction. Local probing of these submicrometer features, however, is challenging due to the buried 2DEG structures. Using a newly developed microw...

Order by disorder from nonmagnetic impurities in a two-dimensional quantum spin liquid.

We consider doping of nonmagnetic impurities in the spin-1/2, 1/5-depleted square lattice. This structure, whose undoped phase diagram offers both magnetically ordered and spin-liquid ground states, is realized physically in CaV4O9. Doping into the ordered phase results in a progressive loss of order, which becomes complete at the percolation threshold. By contrast, doping into the spin liquids...

Local thermometry of neutral modes on the quantum Hall edge

Electrons in two dimensions and strong magnetic fields can form an insulating two-dimensional system with conducting one-dimensional channels along the edge. Electron interactions in these edges can lead to independent transport of charge and heat, even in opposite directions. Here, we heat the outer edge of such a quantum Hall system using a quantum point contact. By placing quantum dots upstr...

Nonequilibrated counterpropagating edge modes in the fractional quantum Hall regime.

It is well established that density reconstruction at the edge of a two-dimensional electron gas takes place for hole-conjugate states in the fractional quantum Hall effect (such as v=2/3, 3/5, etc.). Such reconstruction leads, after equilibration between counterpropagating edge channels, to a downstream chiral current edge mode accompanied by upstream chiral neutral modes (carrying energy with...

Nonmagnetic impurities in the spin-1 Õ2 kagome antiferromagnet

Motivated by recent experiments on ZnCu3 OH 6Cl2, we study the inhomogeneous Knight shifts local susceptibilities of a spin-1 /2 kagome antiferromagnet in the presence of nonmagnetic impurities. Using high temperature series expansion, we calculate the local susceptibility and its histogram down to about T=0.4J. At low temperatures, we explore a Dirac spin liquid proposal and calculate the loca...
